Sarasota Tomorrow Mobilizes Resources to Support School Funding Referendum

Sarasota Tomorrow and The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) leaders are mobilizing resources to fully support the passage of the upcoming School Funding Referendum.

Sarasota Tomorrow is asking its investors to support the 1 mill extension property tax that goes toward critical funding of the Sarasota County schools. The extension will be up for renewal March 16, 2010. Sarasota Tomorrow also strongly encourages Sarasota County residents to vote “yes” to continue our commitment to the quality of our schools.

Voting “yes” will NOT increase taxes but will only serve to continue funding at the current level (1 mill = $100 for a $100,000 house). This important funding for our schools is needed now more than ever as the state’s financial support for schools continues to see significant reductions. The continuation of the 1 mill is projected to raise $40-50 million a year from 2010 to 2014 and will be used to:
- attract and retain high quality teachers
- fund professional development and training
- enhance programs for art, music and career educations
- keep class sizes low in subjects not covered by the state’s class size amendment
- continue the district’s dedication to our children’s’ education excellence

You will receive a “Call to Action” email in the near future with next steps and detailed information. Sarasota Tomorrow asks its investors to forward this email on to all employees and to encourage applicable residents to vote “yes.” Signage will also be available at The Chamber for those wishing to provide additional marketing support of this important issue.
